Who We Are
At Two Rivers, we have a very simple purpose: to embrace and embody the Gospel both in the church and among all the people of Charleston with the hope and prayer of seeing the mercy, faith and justice of Christ's Kingdom come to our city.
We desire that people in our church know and experience three things through a committed relationship with the God that made them and redeems their life:
- Communion with God
- Community with one another
- Compassion for God's world
Our Beliefs
What is the gospel? In the person of Jesus, God emptied himself of his glory and wealth and became human. Through the life and death of Jesus, God substituted himself for us—he died a sinners death and by my repentance and faith we receive life as sons and daughters. By merciful love Jesus brings us into God's family. We respond in worship as a church and servants in our community. At the return of Jesus, God will restore creation and make a new world in which we can freely enjoy our new life together with him forever.
We believe the gospel as taught in the whole Bible.
The truth is real, clear, and freeing to all who read and receive its message personally.
We believe that the gospel changes everything for everybody.
No one person, class, race, or sinful condition is beyond the reach of Christ's pardon and power for a new life.
We believe the gospel as embodied (lived out) in the Church.
We are members of a family that calls God our Father through adoption as sons and daughters in Jesus the Son.
We believe in the gospel of the kingdom.
'Thy will be done, Thy Kingdom come' (Lord's Prayer) is our prayer for our home, neighborhood, city, world. We serve a King who rules our hearts and lives with love and justice.
Our Vision and Strategy
The Vision
Moved by the gospel, Two Rivers seeks to renew Charleston by the expression of our love for God and our love for our neighbor. This is really one love. Failing to love God we fail to love our neighbor and likewise, failing to love our neighbor we fail to love God. Our love for God moves us ever forward in love toward all people.
We hope Christ the King will rule over our hearts and lives that we may so experience and express the 3 C's of a Committed follower of Christ: Communion, Community, and Compassion.
The Strategy
1. Invite people to Communion with God.
We want to change people's hearts with the gospel. Old desires and passions are swallowed up by an overwhelming desire for intimacy with God. This happens through worship and through evangelism.
2. Invite people to Community with one another.
We want to create a new community with the gospel. Transformed lives require intimate fellowship with others as we learn how to live out the gospel in real life. This happens through community groups, bible studies, men/woman groups and discipleship ministries.
3. Invite people to Compassion in our city.
We want to move out into our world in love and service. The gospel as good news has to go somewhere. It is not our own goodness but Christ's and he desires to use our hands, hearts and heads for the good of others and his glory. This happens through Habitat for Humanity, ‘Jesus Sheds', mercy gifts, and church planting.
The Resource
All these ministries depend on stewardship of the resources we have received from God and surrender for his service. We want to cultivate a garden of sacrificial donations of time, talents, and gifts as we grow a culture of generosity at Two Rivers. The gospel leads us to be a generous people as we serve a generous God.
Theological Foundation:
The Great Commandment (Mark 12) : Love God; Love People
The Great Commission (Matthew 28) : Reach My Neighbor; Teach My Brother
Our Core Values
We are currently praying and evaluating what core distinctives God is designing and equipping us to serve from.
It may sound like a no-brainer but we take very seriously that we shall measure our ministry by the things we value.
For instance, if we value outreach and spreading the good news of God's grace, we must constantly be measuring our ministry by this value or else it is just words without any real value.
If we value compassion ministry, "Are we demonstrating deeds of benevolence in our midst, mercy on the street, and justice in the city?"
